Pro tip: Don't buy a 1950s vacuum cleaner off eBay just for the looks

I spent $120 on a vintage Hoover canister vacuum from 1954 because it looked so cool in the photos. Got it delivered last Tuesday and the thing barely sucks anything up lol. The motor runs fine but the hose has a tiny crack I didn't notice, and the bag attachment is some weird size they don't make anymore. Tried to find replacement parts online and found out the bag is basically impossible to get without paying another $50. So now I have a $120 paperweight that looks nice in my laundry room but can't clean a single rug. Has anyone else fallen for the vintage appliance trap? I should have just bought a modern one from Walmart for half the price.

I paid $80 for a vintage Sunbeam mixer from 1959 once (same kind of deal), and the thing works great but I can't ever find replacement beaters for it. So now it's basically a fancy bowl holder. You mentioned the bag size being the real issue though - have you checked if the bag attachment connects to the canister with a standard size ring that could be swapped out for a modern one with a little duct tape or something? I'm just curious if there's a way to hack it without dropping another $50 on a paper bag (which seems insane to me).

$120 for a 50s Hoover that doesn't work is rough, but honestly that's how most of these vintage appliance buys go. I've noticed people get all caught up in the retro look and forget that old stuff was designed for old problems-dust and hair were different back then, and the materials were built to last but not to be fixed. The bag size thing is the real killer, it's like buying a classic car then finding out the tires don't exist anymore. At least you can put a plant on it or something, that's about all mine are good for now.
