Look also for old intestinal scars, as a path way for pathogens..

Back in the day when in Suriname (Dutch Guyana) we would shoot (wild)tree rats via 22 caliber rifles, never had this problem of ERS.

Circa 1998 Miami, had a female 2 meter- Boa Constrictor Amarili WC that would resurge every lab rodent or chick fed since day one regardless
of size or weight. One night I found a large (wild) opossum in the field, brought it back to the facility, fed it to the boa and it digested theone kilo animal perfectly in less than three days with no distention observed. The rest of its digestive process was with out incident, this was a huge meal for this animal, but I was at "the end of my rope" with her.
