Agreed. In college I wrote a paper, "The Seeds of Discontent" which attributed the issue of slavery as the emotional impetus needed to 'sell the war' to the North.

Trade and or restraint of trade, tariffs, etc. were proximate cause for the civil war.

The paper was well received, and earned me a 'get out of class free card' from all of that professor's history classes.
