Here is something that you maybe did not know.

The 13th amendment as origially written by Congress was to actually guarantee chattel slavery in perpetuity. It seems that it was actually passed by congress and submitted to the states, but by the time Congrees did that secession was well under way. This is proof for many that in fact the issue of chattel slavery at the beginning of the war was only incidental to the cause of the war.

"No Amendment shall be made to the Constitution which will authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere, within any state, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of persons held to labor or service by the laws of said State." --Joint Resolution of Congress, Adopted March 2, 1861
