The idea raised by David Searles is a great one. That the SLP ignored it may have to do with the times. Today, with the abortion-foes seeking an Amendment, talk of Amendment is not so "weird"..It might indeed become the rallying point for political action. This could be the first tangible 'action' dissatisfied but disorganized citizens could rally around, and use to build a new, transformative political party to creaqte a true economic democracy. With unions being decimated, who knows where the spark will come from? I do know, talking with people, they have nothing AGAINST SOCIALISM, they just don't envision how it could ever come into being.Yet there is a real need to "DO SOMETHING". This could offer a talking point (what would a new society look like? Work?) Citizen activism seems to have been revitalized by Bush & the Neo-Cons, grave economic problems, the Globalization Wars, etc. authors & researchers critiquing & analyzing the economic system....The big thing this election? CHANGE. Ok, you want change? Lets give people something they can really discuss & sink their teeth into! The 'people's movements' in Latin America & elsewhere, according to Naomi Klein in "Shock Doctrine" (a very popular book with names like actors John Cusak, Tim Robbins etc among those reviewing it)foretell of renewed interest in worker councils, nationalized resources & industries...Such views are seeping into the culture. A new political party with a clear Economic Democracy platform & society-model & Amendment to legally change ownership, management &
participatory democracy.....who knows where it could lead. We need comments from everyone about "The Next Step"....this is a very refreshing concept!
