Editor's Note: I was reminded there were two historic Paris Communes: the first(1791)was a spontaneous revolt during the French Revolution; the second in 1871 was a well-organized governing body that lasted two months as a reaction to France's economic collapse following defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. It is often seen as the first truly working-class attempt at self-governance in the new industrial age. Which brings up another connection for that year: in 1871, in Russia, Nicolai Lenin is born.
