The "Great Debate, Part II" was held and the audience greeted the alternative parties- Green, Libertarian and our own group People For A New Society- with real interest. Although the questions often were based on prevailing political mindsets and difficult to address
in 30 seconds, PFANS was able to describe the limitations that our present Capitalist system places on solving the problems--caused by Capitalism. When the political system privately owned & run controls the media, language, conversation and all the powerful forms of persuasion, it is not easy to offer a 'clean palette' that envisions true grassroots democracy at the worksite as well as in the community. Real democracy has been so associated with either mob-rule, local graft & corruption, or The Perfect Human Robot, that simple commonsense recognition that we- The People- ALREADY run & manage our society & industries BUT UNDER THE TOTAL DOMINANCE & CONSTRAINT OF THE PROFIT MOTIVE! WE JUST DON"T HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE ANY DECISIONS ABOUT HOW OUR SOCIETY RUNS! We lack control, choice, cooperative ownership by THE PEOPLE. That we do as well as we do is a sign of what WE THE PEOPLE could achieve if we had REAL DEMOCRACY, where we live, where we work ( as our tee-shirt says--want one? contact us here for ordering)...The idea is
truly liberating.
We hope that more open forums like this are ahead of us all over America--and the world. Organize one in your local area or town. Public space is often free for the asking, local press releases cost nothing.
This is a critical time filled with great opportunity--With its dire revelations of how the political and economic systems are privately and autocratically run for the benefit of the owners of the industries & corporations, People are learning more about Capitalism than probably ever before. But it can't be squandered. Lets get more forums like the one in Cape Cod....Editors
