Engler, like Naomi Klein and many others with prominent access to the media, have helped reveal the excesses of Capitalism, in particular,in pointing out the devastaing impact of 'globalization'. Yet none call for the end to its cause: Capitalism. They are helping on one hand, but not going far enough to show that only ridding ourselves of the system that inevitably leads to these excesses, will finally relieve the people & the planet of the totally unnecessary havoc it brings. Its not enough to condemn 'free markets' and the IMF, the CIA, the World Bank, the Big Corporatization that leaves millions starving and millions more insecure. Reform liberals have been doing it for over a hundred years..and todays Obama-Nader-McKinney supporters still do it today, in every election. Absolutely, our Thanks to Engler and Klein, Chomsky and Zinn. But each must add a final chapter to their commentary and move from critique to formulating "The Next Step".
By simply stating the last obvious, remaining & missing point that must be made in their texts, by clearly & courageously addressing not only the critique of capitalism, but the need and possibility for a mass movement to overcome Capitalism and put in place a TRUE DEMOCRACY (what the Sociologist Michael Dawson calls "universal democracy" or Democratic Socialism in his latest book "The Consumer Trap")these influential writers & thinkers COULD ACTUALLY BE MORE THAN CRITICS< THEY COULD BE INSTRUMENTS FOR THE FUTURE SOCIETY WE DESPERATELY NEED TO ENVISION AND CREATE. They have given us the facts, now we need the blinders to be removed, the qualifiers gone, and the New Society to be begun. They must know this. Even Obama got it, that people want "hope" & even more want "change!" Now we would benefit greatly from them using their 'Bully-Pulpit" to shout it from the rooftops. We need their critiques, but soon it will become clear we need more.
