Abstract (Document Summary)
Using an August 2002 appraisal, Caltrans determined that the church was worth $1.4 million and deposited the amount with the state treasurer in April 2003, according to court documents. [John C. Murphy] said Caltrans received approval to condemn the property from the Board of Supervisors on May 20, 2003. Court records indicate that Caltrans filed the eminent domain action about two months later. "They got it all backward. They did things you aren't supposed to do," Murphy said. "It is like they picked the most vulnerable landowners out there and then through bureaucratic insensitivity took advantage of them."
Caltrans demolished the structures. Mather said pews and other furniture were destroyed by wrecking crews and vandals, although Caltrans officials had promised to preserve them.
