Utility Vows Better Emergency Response
Senior Officials Testify Before Utility Board
POSTED: 6:26 am EDT May 12, 2009
BOSTON -- Unitil said it has new contingency plans in place to deal with emergencies like the central Massachusetts ice storm that left thousands of customers without power for nearly two weeks last December.
Senior officials of the utility testified Monday before the state Department of Public Utilities in Boston.
The officials said their new plan includes better communications and contracts with additional power line crews that could be called in after a widespread outage. The utility said it would hold emergency drills to test the new procedures in the fall.
Unitil's chief operating officer, Thomas Meissner Jr., called the Dec. 11-12 ice storm an unprecedented natural disaster for the region.
