The place where I work got hit by lightening last Sunday. It took out the building UPS and generator, part of the network backbone and a server here and there. All the emergency lights were powered by the backup system so it was unsafe for us to work until accommodations could be made. The building has very few windows and there was a chance you could be trapped in pitch blackness in many locat1ons in the facility. Just imagine what it would be like stuck in a clean room, all suited up and power dies and emergency lights fail. It doesn't get much blacker than that.

Anyway, we had most of Monday and and all of Tuesday off. I took advantage of the free time to go over to my friendly neighborhood Verizon wireless office and cancel my account. I've been waiting for this opportunity. No Verizon FiOS in New Hampshire, then no Verizon wireless in the Herrick house. Sometime in October, I plan to kill my FairPoint DSL too. The service has gotten worse, not better, since FairPoint took over. On the plus side, their monthly charge did drop. But,it doesn't matter, they'll be history at my house this Fall.
