I agree, especially with today's automatic cameras, great photography often is reduced to simply composing the shot. However, I wouldn't say getting an (unfortunately) outdated camera is the only or even the best answer. More likely, the salient point we both made was to avoid digital zoom. What I saw in the original post was someone unhappy with his photos. I'd much rather have this guy play with his camera's settings, which probably include aperture, ISO speed, as well as shutter speed and see what he can do with what he already has before spending money on a different camera.
