Based on the comments received so far, it seems possible that shyness and an interest in bondage may be related. I suspect that it might be less a cause and relationship effect than one of opportunity.

Shy people have more opportunities to fantasize than a social butterfly. That does not mean that shyness causes kinkiness. It may be a factor that helps enable it. A shy person may be more ready to dream about being able to use bondage to have the person of their dreams or to be so irresistible that the person of their dreams wants to imprison them. Shy people are also social outsiders, so they are more ready to accept things that, if revealed, would make them unpopular. They have less to lose than somebody more obsessed with social status because they're already low on the social ladder.

Shyness wouldn't be a cause of a bondage interest, but may be one of many components that are part of the psyche of a kinky person.
