Yvette! Thanks for this. I searched for the stamp on the (very nice) cover,
and it's a 1881 1 penny stamp with Queen Victoria on it. I googled it,
and read that the first stamp with no royal member was edited in 1967
to commemorate the solo round the world voyage of Gipsy Moth IV: "a
person appears as an unidentifiable blob on the yacht – as there was
only one person on board it must have been Francis Chichester" (this
sounds splendidly British!). A stamp was made to honour Freddie
Mercury, with drummer Roger Taylor in the background.
And then again the royal family member rule was broken in March 2001
with a series dedicated to English Weather, and in December 2003,
"when players from England's victory over Australia in the 2003 Rugby
World Cup Final were shown; however, no faces appeared."Again, the rule
was (finally ) abandoned with the release on 6 October 2005 of a set of
stamps to commemorate the English cricket team's victory over Australia
in the 2005 Ashes series (always Australia!). In January 2007 Beatles
album covers appeared on British stamps.
Well, all the stuff above, Yvette, only because I saw the cover of your
book. I'd better go to sleep.
