I recommend THE SWEETNESS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PIE
by Alan Bradley. A new voice in mystery.
Though he's written other books, this is his genre
debut. Love, LOVE the protagonist: an 11 year old
English girl who is, shall we say, a bit eccentric.
(As only the Brits seem to be able to be.)

The setting is an old shambles of a country house -
one of those big crumbling piles of death taxes and
lost fortunes overseen by a widower/philatelist with
three daughters. It is the 50's, just a few years
after the end of WWII.

The star: 11 year old Flavia DeLuce, precocious,
genius, budding chemist to be feared. Ha!
Very funny stuff.

Also like the design of the book as a whole.
