Safety of registrants email addresses

I received this post recently from a member on one of my message boards:

When you register on the site it says:

"Through password protection, email extraction bots cannot extract your email address to be redistributed."

But I don't think that is true.

I ran the following command on my UNIX box:

% curl 'http://www.hwforums.com/2151/messages/207.html' | grep '@'

and it printed out email addresses.

So, I'm curious why do you all think that our email addresses are safe from bots?

Can you answer this? Thanks very much for your prompt replies to this and all my questions. This forum is superb!
